Writing Prompts

1) (Show don't tell) - Rewrite: James felt intimidated; Samantha was terrified; Michael looked angry.

2) Describe the aroma of the coffee rather than telling us its brewing; describe someone's expertise through their actions; describe the setting through sensory language; describe a character by how others react to him/her; describe the mood by focusing on the way the characters act.

3) Write a story from this opening: "Mother died today. Or maybe, yesterday. I can't be sure."; "It was a bright cold day in April and the clocks were striking thirteen."; "Hale knew, before he had been in Brighton for three hours, that they meant to murder him."

4) Write a story that ... involves a family/group/individual that live in only one room; from the perspective of an animal; two people who have just met and they're trapped somewhere together; a crime gang on the run from the police; a story that takes place in one hour/one day/one week; someone who lives in a place that is unfamiliar; a long journey on a train/plane/boat; lost in a wood/forest/jungle

5) Your central character undergoes a change, a transformation, a metamorphosis

6) Your central character is on a journey to get back home, but encounters difficulties on their passage.
